Char

The note of char presents a potent, often challenging olfactory profile, immediately striking with an acrid, intensely smoky, and phenolic character. It is fundamentally dry, almost arid, yet can possess a deep, tarry richness reminiscent of smoldering embers or creosote-treated wood. Its intensity is typically high, cutting through compositions with a distinct, almost aggressive edge. Projection is robust, capable of dominating a scent, while its longevity is remarkable, anchoring fragrances firmly as a tenacious base note. Depending on its source and concentration, it can range from the sharp, metallic tang of an extinguished match to the deep, resonant warmth of a dying campfire, or the complex, almost leathery nuances of birch tar. It rarely behaves as a top note, often emerging after the initial evanescence, evolving into a more mellow, yet still pervasive, smoky presence in the heart and dry-down.
