The characteristic powdery, slightly woody-floral scent most commonly associated with "violet" in perfumery comes from synthetic ionones. These molecules can create a soft, velvety texture, sometimes with a cool, almost damp earth undertone. Intensity varies greatly; it can be a whisper-soft, ethereal presence or a surprisingly tenacious, projecting force, particularly the ionones. It often behaves as a heart note, blooming after the initial green or citrus top notes, but its tenacity, especially the ionones, can lend it base note qualities.
