It can range from the dry, pencil-shaving sharpness of cedarwood, often with a slightly camphoraceous or even leathery undertone, to the creamy, milky, and profoundly warm embrace of sandalwood, which can feel almost buttery or lactonic. Vetiver, while technically a grass root, often presents as a woody note, offering a smoky, earthy, and sometimes slightly damp or even grapefruit-like facet. Oud, the "liquid gold" of perfumery, is complex and can be animalic, medicinal, smoky, leathery, or even subtly sweet and resinous, with immense depth and projection. Guaiac wood offers a smoky, tar-like, and warm balsamic quality, while birch tar is intensely smoky and leathery.
